“This was the year we kicked off our new five-year Asics Growth Plan, embarking on an ambitious new set of sustainability targets towards 2020,” he said. “We’re committed to striving harder than ever to keep improving our sustainability performance in everything we do.”
During 2016, the company launched an energy efficiency project in Europe, which was designed to increase its use of renewable electricity. Asics revealed that this allowed it to switch around 300,000 kWh to renewable energy and save 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Asics also took steps to make its retail stores more sustainable. It incorporated LED lighting, energy efficient systems and renewable materials into its new flagship store in Brussels, and installed solar panels and a real-time electricity monitoring system at its footwear factory in Japan.
In 2017, the company expects to double its total use of renewable energy in Europe, which will mean renewable sources will account for 10% of its total global electricity usage.
The report also highlighted the efforts made by Asics to ensure its suppliers meet the required standards for environmental sustainability and human rights. It expanded its auditing to include Tier 2 suppliers, which is the part of the supply chain responsible for fabric dyeing and other industrial processes that involve potentially harmful chemicals.
From 2017, the company will publicly disclose the names of the partners involved in the manufacturing of its footwear, apparel and accessories.
