Cambodia’s garment wage negotiations to begin in July

22/06/2017
Cambodia’s Labour Minister, Ith Sam Hen, has announced that the process for setting the minimum wage for workers in the country’s garment sector will get underway in July.

The negotiations will take place between the government, workers unions and employers. All three will receive guidance and advice from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) next month.

All three parties will come up with a proposed rate and negotiations will then take place from September. Cambodia’s Labour Advisory will make a final decision in October, with the new rate coming into effect on January 1, 2018.

In 2016, garment workers secured a pay rise following prolonged negotiations with employers and the government. From January 2017, their minimum wage increased to $153, up from $140 the previous year. Employers agreed to provide $148, with the government adding the other $5.
