Wage increase for Cambodia’s garment workers

09/10/2018
The Cambodian government has announced that the monthly minimum wage for workers in the country’s garment and footwear industries will be set at $182 for 2019, up from the current level of $170. This represents an increase of 7%.

Cambodia’s Labour Advisory Committee (LAC) had approved a minimum wage of $177 for 2019, but the government added an extra $5 to the final figure. In addition, workers will be eligible for other fringe benefits, such as an extra $10 per month for regular attendance or an extra $7 per month for transportation and rent.

Reacting to the announcement, the president of the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia, Van Sou Ieng, said the new minimum was high and that it could make it difficult for the country’s garment and footwear industries to compete with other countries.

In 2012, the minimum monthly wage was $61. This means that as of January 1, 2019 it will have increased by nearly 200% in seven years.
