Clothing campaign groups write protest letter to Cambodia’s PM

A group of campaign organisations working for fair trade in the garment and textile sectors has written a strongly worded letter to the prime minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, to complain about “weakening human rights protection” and the undermining of progress towards improved worker rights.

Six groups, the Fair Wear Foundation, Fair Labor Association, the Ethical Trading Initiative, American Apparel and Footwear Association, Social Accountability International and amfori, signed the letter.

They acknowledged that Cambodia is an important sourcing market for international garment brands and commended the government for helping the garment industry grow from generating $27 million in 1995 to being an industry today that generates $6.3 billion per year and employs 650,000 people.

However, they echoed concerns expressed at the start of March by the United Nations about increasing disregard for civil liberties, difficulties in increasing the minimum wage and protecting workers who protest from “reprisal or prejudicial action”.
