Downlite launches composting initiative

Performance down fill supplier Downlite has partnered with an organic recycling company so that its waste feathers can be treated for use in soil compost. This prevents them from being sent to landfill.

Downlite has explained that the dry feathers will help to make the compost, which usually comes from food waste with a high moisture content, more manageable when mixed with other matter. They will also help to degrade the matter of the compost more efficiently due to their added pore space. Feathers are also rich in keratin, which slowly releases nitrogen when added to compost. This allows for long-term plant growth stimulation, Downlite said.

This programme is the latest initiative launched by Downlite to increase its environmental sustainability. In September 2016, it installed a new wastewater recovery system at its down and feather processing plant near Cincinnati, US.

The company said the system would allow it to recycle and reuse up to 99% of the water used to wash its down and feather fills. Downlite revealed that it has saved 20 million gallons of water since its installation, exceeding the company’s expectations.
