Bolt Threads purchases US apparel company

31/07/2017
Spider silk manufacturer Bolt Threads has completed the acquisition of Best Made, a New-York based company specialising in outdoor apparel and camping gear.

No financial details about the deal have been revealed, but it is believed all 25 of the people employed by Best Made will become Bolt Threads employees.

In March, Bolt Threads released the first product made from its Boltspun spider silk, a necktie. It released 50 of the limited-edition products.

Bolt Threads CEO Dan Widmaier told Fortune magazine that he hopes the purchase of Best Made will help Bolt Threads to improve its technology and to expand its product range. It will also allow it to sell its products directly to the consumer.

He added that the acquisition will not affect Bolt Thread’s partnership with Patagonia, which was agreed in May 2016. The two companies have been working together to design and develop products that use spider silk. These are “still in development”, according to Mr Widmaier.
