New chapter for Bolt Threads
22/08/2024
Founded 14 years ago in Berkeley, California, Bolt has been pursuing three possible types of biomaterials derived from fermentation: B-Silk Protein, a silicone replacement in cosmetics, Microsilk, a biotech silk yarn, and Mylo, a leather-like material. The mycelium-based leather activities were phased out last year. Its main product, B-silk was launched in 2020, and is present in Kelly Slater’s Freaks of Nature sunscreen. The company says it has been granted 49 patents and has 171 patent applications pending.
“We are pleased to begin our next chapter in the public market as the leading biomaterials platform, focused on transforming the high-volume consumer goods industries by delivering superior alternative materials tapped from nature,” commented Dan Widmaier, Bolt Threads co-founder and CEO.
