Spanish groups aim to turn orange waste into bioplastic

23/08/2017
Spanish companies and universities are working together to turn orange peel into a bioplastic to use some of the country’s estimated 1.2 million tonnes of waste from the juice industry.

Spain is the fifth largest producer of oranges and juices in the world and the waste is mainly used for manufacturing animal feed pellets, or disposed of in landfill.

The MIPLASCOE project, supported by Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, will look to extract monomers by microbial fermentation and then synthesise bio-polyesters.

Juice company J Garcia Carrion is working alongside agriculture company Agrocode, lab technicians at Canagrosa, packaging company Plastipak, plastics specialist Lisanplast and construction group AZVI, together with the University of Seville, the Polytechnic University of Valencia and AIMPLAS, the Institute of Plastic Technology, in a project that will run until December 2018.

Other textile-focused companies that are working with orange waste include Archroma for its EarthColors range (recycling orange peels in Spain), Orange Fiber in Sicily and Citrene in Boston.
