Finnish technical research centre VTT is leading a new smart clothing project, which it says will create new business opportunities by helping Finnish companies develop “completely new products for the international markets”.

On announcing the new project, which it has called Smart Clothing 2.0, project leader, VTT’s Pekka Tuomaala, said: “We are organising an ambitious collaboration network for smart clothing to commercialise Finnish expertise in the booming national and international markets. We will develop genuinely new smart clothing for diverse user groups, be it hikers, top athletes, firefighters, children of all ages, fitters working high on masts, personnel maintaining and installing lifts, or patients recovering in hospitals.”

The project, which will run until December 2018, already has five participants that are developing smart clothes and services, including Finnish outdoor equipment brand Suunto. The others are Inkron, Savox, Reima and Wind Controller.
