Finland: MEP showcases novel recycled garments

13/12/2017
Finnish MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen wore a dress made from VTT’s latest renewable fibre, which she accessorised with bioplastics, to celebrate Finland's Centenary Independence Day Reception at the Presidential Palace.

The research institute used its own cellulose carbamate technology (CCA) to dissolve used cotton textiles and to produce new fibre from the solution.

The knitted fabric, which has been described as smooth with a matt finish, was made in VTT's Bioruukki pilot facility in Espoo.

Ms Pietikäinen’s evening bag was mainly made of bio-based plastics and her earrings were made of bioplastic tinted with a nanocellulose paint and coloured with autumn leaf pigments, developed by VTT.

Ms Pietikäinen said: "The outfit combines outstanding Finnish innovation with Anna Ruohonen's top design, representing the socially responsible use of textiles. I hope that, in 100 years' time, women are celebrating in outfits made of sustainable, recycled fibre.”
