VTT scales up cellulose research
Finnish research institute VTT has increased its research into cellulose by adding a €3 million pilot line at its facility in Jyväskylä.

The new machinery allows testing to be taken to a commercial level, rather than be conducted at laboratory scale, and VTT says brands are already on board.

VTT’s executive vice-president, Jussi Manninen, said: "The scale of our bioproduct development environment, which we use to promote the development of the forest industry, makes it unique in the world.

"We believe in the future of cellulose and other natural fibres, as our industry needs new high value-added products in addition to paper and board."

VTT spin-out Spinnova uses local forests as a source of raw material for a new textile, currently at the testing stage. See WSA Sept-Oct for an indepth look.
