Spinnova’s cellulosic fibre is ‘a one of a kind material’

Finnish bio-yarn producer Spinnova used a recent blog post to highlight some of the qualities of the cellulosic fibre it has been developing over the past three years.

In the post, it explained that the fibre has yet to be classified and remains in the research and development phase. As a result, the complete qualities of the material are not yet clear, it added, although Spinnova is in the process of scaling up production at its pilot factory, which will give it more information about the fibre.

It compared the hand feel of the cellulose-based fibre as closest to cotton or linen. It is also sturdy, which Spinnova said makes it suitable for “applications that need poise”. The secret to its strength is that its cross section is not circular, making it flexible in one direction but stiff in the other.

Spinnova said the water retention properties of its fibre can be “tuned” to different levels, from low absorption levels to the point where it can absorb nearly 10 times its own weight. It also highlighted the fibre’s “amazing” insulation properties, which it said are on a par with lambswool.

Other qualities Spinnova mentioned were good abrasion resistance, a pilling level on par with cotton and non-conductivity of electricity. It also said it is likely to be non-allergenic and antibacterial.
