Novel wood-based yarn from Finnish research firm
Finland-based research and development company Spinnova is developing a fibre to yarn technology based on wood which it claims is totally different from traditional textile yarn production.

The spin-off from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland uses no chemicals to dissolve wood fibre to a polymer level and regenerate cellulosic filaments. It says the technology allows the production of novel, low cost and environmentally friendly textile yarns for filaments made directly from wood fibres through a wet spinning process.

Janne Poranen, the CEO of Spinnova, previously worked in pulp and paper making research at VTT and says the technique is ideal for refining Finnish long fibre length woods, such as that of pine and spruce. Its inventor, Juha Salmela, is the company's chief technology officer (CTO).

Spinnova has secured €1.95 million from various parties including investment firms and the former CTO of Nokia.
