Lenzing mulls extra Tencel plant after performance of jumbo facility
Managers at fibre group Lenzing in Austria have said they are pleased with how their jumbo Tencel plant has worked in its first six months, running at full capacity and producing high quality fibres.
CEO Peter Untersperger described the facility, which can produce 67,000 tons of Tencel fibre per year, as “a technological milestone for lyocell technology”.
Lenzing spent around €100 million on research in lyocell technology over the past five years and says it will remain a priority.
If demand continues to increase as expected, the company says it will consider setting up another production facility.
Robert van de Kerkhof, chief commercial officer, added: “The fibre offers good breathing properties, excellent wearing comfort, high strength and uses environmentally-compatible production on the basis of the natural raw material, wood.”
As of the end of 2014, annual Tencel production was 220,000 tons, manufactured at the Austrian sites in Lenzing and Heiligenkreuz; in Alabama in the USA and in Grimsby, Great Britain.
