European recognition for Spinnova innovator

13/02/2019
Finnish bio-yarn producer Spinnova has announced that Juha Salmela, its co-founder and the man behind the spinning method it uses to make its cellulosic fibre, has been selected as Chief Technology Officer of the Year for 2018 by the European Industrial Research Management Association (EIRMA).

The CTO of the Year Europe awards are given each year to prominent European technology leaders. Mr Salmela won in the small and medium-size company category.

The winner of the award for large companies was Dr Nicolas Cudré-Mauroux of advanced materials and specialty chemicals group Solvay.

Mr Salmela invented a method for spinning textile out of microfibrillated cellulose without harmful chemicals in 2009, taking his inspiration from spider silk research. This innovation has since been scaled to a large industrial pilot plant.

Spinnova’s CEO and co-founder Janne Poranen said: “This recognition for Salmela is well deserved, thank you to the organisers. In addition to being our innovator and the mastermind behind our technology, Juha is also an inspiring colleague and a caring team leader who wants to see other people succeed.”
