Asics wants to create custom midsoles in 15 seconds

Athletic footwear and apparel brand Asics has teamed up with Taiwanese company Tayin Research & Development to develop a new technique that uses microwave technology to create custom midsoles in just 15 seconds.

The components for the midsole come in the form of coloured pellets. The idea is that once the customer has chosen the colours they want, the pellets are placed in a mould in the microwave, where they are fused together to create the midsole.

The process is still in the testing phase but Asics estimates that the use of “microwave production technology” could reduce energy consumption by almost 90% compared to its standard midsole manufacturing technique. The new technique is also quicker than the 3D printing technology currently being explored by a number of leading footwear manufacturers.

Asics has said that this technology has the potential to “revolutionise” the in-store experience of consumers by allowing them to customise the colour of the midsole and upper of their shoes on the spot. It plans to introduce the technology for select footwear ranges in the future.
