Textile technology developer Schoeller has announced that it has optimised its coldblack technology, that helps fabrics absorb less heat from the sun and stay cool to the touch, for knitted and woven fabrics.

Germany-based wool and wool-blend yarn producer Südwolle has become one of the first to take advantage of the development by releasing a new combination of merino wool and coldblack. The two partners have stated that the combination promises enhanced comfort for wearers of wool apparel.

On making the announcement, Schoeller paid tribute to merino wool apparel for use in the summer. It said the fibres can absorb high levels of moisture and transport it away from the body. Warm ambient air quickly dries the material and causes a cooling evaporation, which makes it very comfortable to wear in summer weather.

It argued that coldblack technology supports these natural properties because it reduces heat build-up from exposure to the sun. Schoeller worked in partnership with Südwolle to optimise coldblack specifically for use as a finish in merino apparel.

Managing director of product management and innovation at Südwolle, Stéphane Thouvay, said the two partners would present the development at the OutDoor exhibition in Friedrichshafen (June 17-20).
