Unifi shelves plans for Guatemala joint venture

US-based yarn producer Unifi has said it has been unable to reach a definitive agreement with the owners of two Guatemalan companies to establish a joint venture in the country.

In July 2017, it signed a letter of intent with Complast, which owns and operates a bottle processing facility and produces flake and chip under the EuroPET brand name, and TTA, which produces polyester POY and textured yarn under the EuroFIL brand name.

Following the announcement that this joint venture will now not be launched, Tom Caudle, Unifi’s president and chief operating officer, said: "Our commitment to the Central American region remains unchanged and we continue to see growth opportunities for Repreve and our branded portfolio both in the region and across the globe. We will continue to seek future strategic growth opportunities across the Americas that leverage our assets and deliver shareholder value."
