Thread secures nearly $300,000 in funding for recycled canvas backpack

Responsible manufacturer Thread, which makes fabric from plastic bottles collected from coastal areas in Haiti and Honduras, recently launched a crowdfunding campaign on the Kickstarter platform for a new canvas backpack.

Needles to say, the response was positive. The company hit its initial funding target of $45,000 in just seven hours. The campaign has since continued and as of August 24 more than 1,800 ‘backers’ had pledged a total of over $292,000.

The company has said by its calculations, the funding pledged so far will allow it to repurpose 50,000 plastic bottles into canvas to be used in the backpacks. It has now pledged to secure enough funding to bring this total to 100,000 plastic bottles.

“With your support, we can clean up more communities in the first mile of our supply chain and create even more opportunities to earn a living for people who live there,” the company explained.

Thread has previously collaborated with footwear brand Timberland to create a range of shoes made from its fabric. Its other partners have included sports brand Reebok and outdoor brand Marmot.
