Its five new backers are musician Guy Berryman, the former chief operating officer of Burberry, John Smith, sports and lifestyle sector lawyer Nic Couchman, technology entrepreneur and investor Jon Claydon, and the chairman of TEDx Vancouver, Chris Dyer.
Co-Founders Ian Holdcroft and Martin Brooks said on making the announcement: “Since establishing the brand in 2015, Shackleton has grown remarkably by combining expedition-grade performance with luxury styling and materials. We couldn’t be more delighted to have such an experienced and influential group joining the business. We have ambitious plans for growth into new sectors and territories and, with this team, we’re confident we’ll get there.”
Shackleton says it is on a mission to inspire and equip modern pioneers by combining “high performance with luxury materials and distinctive styling”. In keeping with the adventurer who inspired the brand’s name, Sir Ernest Shackleton, all products are UK-made and go for field-testing in Antarctica.
Notable pieces include the Endurance Lightweight Parka, built to perform to minus-30 degrees Celsius and half the weight of competitor products, the brand claims.
The brand is also committed to supporting expeditions. Among recent examples is its support in 2017 for Scott Sears, who broke the world record for the youngest person to trek alone to the South Pole. It will also support the 2018 Shackleton Spirit of Endurance expedition, on which Lou Rudd will attempt to become the first person in history to cross the whole of Antarctica.
