A new spin on smart textiles at Titas 2018
Among the features at the 2018 edition of the Taipei Innovative Textile Application Show (Titas) is the introduction of a new zone dedicated to smart textiles.

This scope of this area, located within the main exhibition hall, ranges from textile products to manufacturing equipment and solutions.

It has been created to bring together textiles and electronics, two of Taiwan’s most important foreign exchange earning industries. These once distinct sectors are becoming increasingly connected.

Justin Huang, president of the Taiwan Textile Federation, said: “In response to the incoming waves of industrial automation and intelligentisation, we hope to inspire the realisation of a smart textile system in order to fulfil the future needs of the market.”

Among the sub-sectors he mentioned were healthcare products with temperature control and positioning functions; modules for pain relief; thermal smartwear; conductive textiles; and solutions incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and RFID technologies.

“All of them go beyond the boundary of traditional textiles to bring us diverse and multi-functional applications,” Mr Huang added.

The pavilion examines current developments in the smart textile arena, as well as looking forward towards possible future trends. A special display area features products from a number of the leading Taiwanese companies in this field. They include:

Tex-Ray, which through its AiQ smart technology brand is showcasing a sports bra featuring conductive threads and fibres;
Asiatic Fibre Corp (AFC), which has on display a vest from its series of smart heating garments. It incorporates the company’s high-tech composite fibres;
Formosa Taffeta, which is displaying garments made thanks to the smart thermal clothing technology it introduced at the end of 2017. This project is a collaboration with DuPont’s Intexar smart clothing technology brand, which provides the conductive circuits for the products.

Beyond the display, the smart textile pavilion is also hosting a number of presentations. Tex-Ray will explain the applications of its AiQ smart clothing technology in the care of the elderly, while Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), will discuss washable conductive films and their potential applications.
