Wireless fabric brings TENS to wearer
A new fabric developed by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) incorporates electrodes into flexible, washable and conductive material, which is used in garments that provide electrical stimulation and massage functions to the wearer.

Described by ITRI president Edwin Liu as a “hybrid smart wearable system used for clothing that provides transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to enhance the wearer’s blood circulation and relieve muscle pain,” iStimUweaR won a CES 2020 Innovation Award.

This means the iStimUweaR fabric directs a current into the body to help stimulate the nervous system, relax muscles and relieve soreness and discomfort. A mobile application analyses the wearer’s physical state and can provide low-voltage electric currents via the clothes, without the use of wires or electric pads.

The app also records all data to analyse the usage status for personal healthcare management.

ITRI describes itself as Taiwan’s largest research institute, with the aim of innovating for a better future for society. Founded in 1973, ITRI focuses on the fields of smart living, quality health and sustainable environment.
