Mountain Khaki to include new SeaWool materials in its autumn 2019 range

Outdoor brand Mountain Khakis will begin to use a new insulation material and a new yarn in a limited number of products in its autumn 2019 collection, with the idea of expanding their use in 2020.

Called SeaWool, the material partly derives from crushed oyster shells, which combine with post-consumer recycled polyester fill insulation material to make SeaWool Insulation and with post-consumer recycled PET bottles to make SeaWool Yarn. Manufactured in a bluesign system partner mill, SeaWool uses a proprietary heat process to combine discarded oyster shells with recycled polyester materials.

“We’re always looking for new, natural materials that can enhance our apparel, while limiting our impact. SeaWool offers a unique opportunity to remove waste and build a superior product at the same time,” said Ned Hutchinson, senior product manager at Mountain Khakis on announcing the development. “The CLO value of the insulation is higher than those of other branded insulations of the same weight, and the yarns offer amazing hand and drape.”

SeaWool Yarn benefits include anti-static, odour-blocking, quick-dry and low thermal conductivity functionality, plus a high warmth-to-weight ratio and a high level of softness.

For its part, SeaWool Insulation is also anti-static, odour-blocking, quick-drying and also offers a high warmth-to-weight ratio. It is designed so that the outer layer consists of robust hollow fibres, while the denser middle layer maximises insulation, resulting in low thermal conductivity, and increased heat storage, Mountain Khakis has said.

Products containing the new materials that it will bring to market in autumn 2019 include the Pearl Street Flannel shirt and the Moran Shirt Jac, made using SeaWool Yarn, and the Triple Direct Jacket and Vest, which contain 60 grammes of SeaWool Insulation.
