Japanese sports brand ASICS has announced a multi-year sponsorship deal with Spanish football star Andrés Iniesta, who recently joined Japanese club Vissel-Kobe after more than a decade of success with Barcelona and the Spanish national team. ASICS is already a sponsor of Vissel-Kobe.

The brand said its vision is to expand its football business and reach a wider audience “across Asia and beyond”. It described Andrés Iniesta as being respected by fans around the world for his playing style and sportsmanship, qualities that it said “closely align with the ASICS brand identity”.

For his part, the player said: “I am committed to elevating the game from grassroots levels in Japan to bridge the gap between Asian football and the rest of the world. I believe this move is another positive step in making this happen.”

Andrés Iniesta played for Barcelona for 16 years, winning the Spanish first division nine times and the UEFA Champions’ League four times, among other honours. With the Spanish national team, he won the European Championship in 2008 and in 2012 and, most famously of all, the World Cup in 2010. He scored the winning goal in the final against the Netherlands.
