ASICS to turn recycled sportswear into Olympic kit
25/01/2019
The project, which it calls Reborn Wear, will run in the build-up to the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will take place in Tokyo.
From now until the end of May, Asics will set op collection boxes at retail stores and at sports events. It aims to collect around 30,000 items of sportswear and will accept products of any brand.
The fibres extracted from the donated clothes will be used to manufacture official wear for Japan’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes at Tokyo 2020.
This project is the latest stage of a strategy put in place by ASICS to bring its business in line with the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were agreed in 2015. This has included making significant reductions to its carbon dioxide emissions.
One of the concrete measures that ASICS has set to achieve its targets is replacing virgin polyester materials in shoe uppers and sportswear products with 100% recycled polyester. Through the Reborn Wear project, it will apply a new production process to extract polyester from the collected items and is it to manufacture thread and fabric for use in sportswear and shoes.
