Asics ends Australian cricketers’ sponsorship deals

Sports brand Asics is one of a number of sponsors to sever ties to the Australian national cricket team following a ball-tampering scandal in March.

Australia’s captain, vice-captain and other players were found to have illegally altered the surface of the ball during a match in South Africa. Governing body Cricket Australia sent three players home from South Africa and banned captain, Steve Smith, and vice-captain, David Warner, for 12 months.  Batsman Cameron Bancroft received a nine-month.

Asics had sponsorship deals in place with two of the players, Warner and Bancroft, but said in the wake of the incident that it was tearing the deals up. Reuters quoted the sports brand as saying the players’ actions were “contrary to the values the company stands for”.
