Sympatex to shout about spun-dyed technology in Munich

Functional materials developer Sympatex has said efforts to broaden the use of spun-dyed textiles can help reduce the industry’s use of water and its contribution to water contamination.

It will present a new line of spun-dyed laminates at the Performance Days exhibition in Munich (November 28-29) and will claim that spun-dyed processes reduce the amount of water needed to dye products of this kind by roughly 75% on average.

Quoting estimates from the World Bank, Sympatex said in the build-up to Performance Days that dye processes in the textile industry account for around 20% of the world’s industrial water contamination. The company added: “This is despite the fact that polyester dye technologies that conserve significantly more water than traditional dye processes, while massively reducing the use of chemicals, have been available for some time.”

According to chief executive, Dr Rüdiger Fox, close co-operation between among supply chain partners is the key to making use of this dye technology more extensive. He said this would mean agreeing colour selections earlier in the process, but said “the enormous ecological benefits that spun-dyed technologies bring” would compensate for this.
