UNIDO pays tribute to Hugo Boss for cotton project
04/06/2019
Around 5,000 smallholder cotton farmers in Egypt are involved in the initial pilot project, which began in the 2018-2019 growing season. UNIDO’s aims are to advance the sustainability of the whole Egyptian cotton value chain by training cotton farmers on more sustainable cotton production practices, reduce the impact of cotton production on the environment and improve conditions for cotton producers.
Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is one of UNIDO’s partners in the project and will provide cotton farmers with guidance and expertise on water stewardship, the use of biological pesticide alternatives and decreased reliance on synthetic fertilisers.
Hugo Boss has supported the project right from the start, UNIDO has said, and made a significant contribution to its development through its “expertise in responsible business practices and market requirements”.
Cotton accounts for around half of all the materials Hugo Boss uses and it says it places the highest requirements on this raw material to ensure high-quality, long-lasting products.
It has set itself the target of purchasing 50% of its cotton from “sustainable production” by 2020, with a further increase to a minimum of 90% by 2025.
