Arc’teryx wants its products to have more than one life
Canadian outdoor brand Arc’teryx has announced the launch of a recommerce programme that it says is designed to prolong the lifecycle of products, give customers access to high quality gear for less, and minimise its environmental footprint.

The programme, which it calls Rock Solid Used Gear, will see the brand buy back used gear that is still in good condition, clean and repair it, then resell items at a lower cost. It will initially launch in the US.

Customers can take used products into their local Arc’teryx stores or use a dedicated online portal to get the process started. The gear will then be assessed at a special repurposing hub. Those items deemed to be lightly worn or in excellent conditions (including having the inner label still attached) will be eligible to be exchanged for a gift card worth 20% of the product’s original retail price.

Any items that cannot be resold, but are still functional, will be donated to organisations that run outdoor programmes and need gear. Arc’teryx is also exploring circular solutions like upcycling of items that cannot be repaired to a satisfactory level.

Announcing the launch of Rock Solid Used Gear, Drummond Lawson, Arc’teryx director of sustainability, said: “Our products are built to last but, to keep them in service as long as feasible, we realised that our business models also needed innovation. Rock Solid Used Gear is the result, a platform that gets more users into great gear and helps lower the footprint of our company by spreading the impact of producing our gear over many more days of use.”
