Levi’s sets ambitious target for water reduction

Denim brand Levi Strauss & Co (LS&Co) has set a goal of cutting its water use in half in water-stressed areas by 2025.

It has developed a strategy that focuses on the most water-stressed areas in its supply chain, using water science and data, consultations and the company’s water management experience.

The approach builds on work done since the 2011 launch of LS&Co’s Water<Less programme. “We believe this is the future for our company and our industry when it comes to managing water use and conserving water,” said Michael Kobori, vice-president of sustainability at LS&Co.

Two core elements of the new strategy are LS&Co's collaborations with suppliers, brands, NGOs and others at the local level to develop progammes that improve the long-term health of watersheds in key sourcing locations, and helping key suppliers achieve the Water<Less designation by 2025.

Mindy Lubber, CEO of non-profit organisation Ceres, said: “With critical water shortages and degradation across the globe, we need more companies to follow Levi’s lead in implementing context-based management strategies that are good for communities and good for business.”
