Snapchat steps into ecommerce with adidas collaboration

Snapchat’s 203 million daily active users (per Snapchat’s Q2 reports) can now buy their next pair of adidas baseball cleats from within the photo-sharing social media platform. Produced with developer AvatarLabs, adidas has created an online baseball game for Snapchat through which users can click their way to buying affiliated shoes.

This game, called “Baseball's Next Level”, is the first time Snapchat has allowed users to buy any product from inside a game, though it’s not platform’s first collaboration with adidas. Last year the sportswear brand used augmented reality to let people "try on" Ultraboost running sneakers via Snapchat.

Here’s how it works: through Snapchat’s Snap Games, users can select a player and a shoe style before playing the simple game that ends when the user strikes out. The game’s closing screen gives the score and provides links to adidas or to Dick’s Sporting Goods (the game’s sponsor), where players can peruse adidas 8-Bit baseball cleats. The cleat’s colourful, pixelated look are based on the 1980s-style 8-bit graphics used in the game.
