Post-consumer cotton goes into Tencel, Lenzing promises more

03/12/2019
Fibre manufacturer Lenzing has said it has succeeded in producing fibres for its Tencel brand using post-consumer cotton waste as part of the raw material mix.

It produced the fibres using a process called Refibra, which Lenzing launched in 2017. It involves combining scraps from post-consumer cotton waste (10%), upcycled cotton scraps collected from garment manufacture (30%) and virgin wood pulp to make new Tencel fibres.

At the time of the announcement, Lenzing said its five-year plan is to increase the share of post-consumer cotton waste to 50% of all the raw material it uses with Refibra technology.
