Mount Olympus farming collective offers traceable European cotton

A Greek initiative that has brought together more than 50 family owned cotton farmers has received its first set of accreditations for its supply chain that covers less than 200km between farm, ginning and spinning.

Supreme Green Cotton suppliers have used Israeli technology to implement a satellite-controlled drip irrigation system that reduces water consumption by up to 40%, they say.

The smart technology helps farmers, who are based around Mount Olympus, plant more effectively by providing information on weather and harvest cycles.

Gianni Tzortzis, sales manager for spinning mill Varvaressos and Supreme Green ambassador, told sportstextiles that the proximity between the cotton fields and spinners drastically reduces the carbon footprint compared with conventional cotton, and it is GMO free.

“We help farmers help themselves. We provide smart farming tools and pay them more money for the cotton they produce,” he said.

“It’s all about being transparent, ethical and open. We want to help everyone get a fair share for what they’re doing. If this is communicated properly, the end consumer will pay a tiny bit extra to know where the material comes from.”

Supreme Green Cotton will have an official launch in September 2020, when they will show fabric made from the supply chain to brands and designers.
