Data from global non-profit organisation Textile Exchange showed that 2017/2018 had 56% growth in global organic cotton production for a total of 180,971 metric tonnes. This is the highest volume seen since 2009/2010, and India, China and Kyrgyzstan were the biggest contributors to the increase.

The numbers were published in the 2019 Organic Cotton Market Report from Textile Exchange, which is said to be the only organisation to collect and report on global organic cotton production data. Growth is expected to continue, with India, Tanzania, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan and China all having significant areas of cotton-growing land in transition to organic.

Facilities certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard and Textile Exchange’s Organic Content Standard is also growing, rising by 15% and 16%, respectively.

The report also found that while cotton is grown organically in 19 countries around the world, 98% of production stems from just 7 countries: India (47%), China (21%), Kyrgyzstan (12%), Tukey (6%), Tajikistan (5%), the United States (3%) and Tanzania (3%).

“Organic production of cotton is the tip of the spear that has been driving change within the sector,” said La Rhea Pepper, Textile Exchange’s managing director. “It establishes a direction of travel for all of us, starting with regenerative soil practices.”
