Thai designer praised for work with selvedge denim
A Thai designer is being described as Thailand’s first in the country to customise jeans using selvedge Japanese denim.

Vitchapong Hutasuwan’s Selvedgework offers bespoke denim services through which — in person or online — consumers can select every aspect of a pair of jeans.

Recently, Channel News Asia ran a profile on Mr Hutasuwan, introducing him as “Thailand's first designer to customise jeans using selvedge Japanese denim”. Selvedge refers to the tightly-woven band on the edge of denim that prevents unravelling. To obtain this specialised fabric, Selvedgework sources denim from mills in the USA, Japan, Thailand and Italy, including Kaihara, Kurabo, Cone, Candiani and AMC Mills.

According to the company, Selvedgework customers start by choosing their favourite fit and fabrics, then select buttons, rivets, thread, a signature metal tag and whether to have button fly or zipper. The final step is choosing the leather patch on which customers’ initials can be embroidered on the jeans.

Mr Hutaswan, whose parents have run a denim factory for three decades, launched his business as an online retail store in 2012. Selvedgework now has three physical locations, including the flagship Siam Square store.
