Burberry launches green capsule with Econyl and sustainability labelling

28/04/2020
British luxury brand Burberry has released a capsule collection of environmentally-friendly pieces made with Econyl nylon and featuring sustainable product labelling.

Called the ReBurberry Edit, the capsule has eyewear made from bio-based acetate, and trench coats, parkas, capes and accessories created from Econyl, a recycled nylon made from regenerated fishing nets, fabric scraps and industrial plastic. According to the company, the parkas and capes are “made at facilities associated with energy and water reduction, textile recycling and chemical management programmes”, while some bags are “associated with the use of renewable energy”.

Additional outerwear pieces in the collection are made using a new nylon developed from renewable resources such as castor oil and a polyester yarn made from recycled plastic bottles.

With the launch comes a global roll out of sustainability labelling across all key-product categories, which are designed to give customers information about the brand’s environmental and social efforts. They indicate how a product meets certain criteria, including the amount of organic content or recycled natural fibres used, delivery against carbon emissions standards at production facilities, and social initiatives.

Currently, two-thirds of Burberry products have more than one such attribute, with a goal for all products by 2022.

“At the half-way point of our Responsibility Strategy to 2022, we remain dedicated to delivering tangible progress against our social and environmental targets, and our holistic, product-focused sustainability programmes are central to this,” said Pam Batty, vice president of corporate responsibility.

“By inviting customers to learn more about the sustainable credentials of our products through our labelling programme, we are helping them to better understand our initiatives and the breadth of the ambition of our Responsibility Agenda. We strongly believe that driving positive change through all of our products at every stage of the value chain is crucial to building a more sustainable future for our whole industry.”
