Spiber wins emerging leader award
Spiber, a specialist in synthetic spider-silk type materials, has been named a “SunBridge Emerging Leader” by the 10th Japan – US Innovation Awards Symposium.
The annual award goes to two startups for technological innovations deemed to be “disrupting their markets”. Beyond Meat was the co-recipient of this year’s award.
Spiber’s signature Brewed Protein is a body of protein materials produced from plant-derived biomass using the company’s proprietary fermentation process; the resulting materials can be processed into a variety of forms, including silky filament fibres and soft spun yarns with thermal and moisture-wicking properties similar to those of wool.
The symposium, held jointly by the Japan Society of Northern California and the Stanford University US–Asia Technology Management Center, was an online event this year. During the event, Spiber’s director and representative executive officer, Kazuhide Sekiyama, gave an acceptance speech and participated in a panel discussion.
