Thread resists heat up to 1000 degrees
Thread manufacturer Guetermann has developed a thread said to be heat resistant to approximately 1000 degrees celsius, designed for specialty seams such as those found in firefighting suits and other personal protective equipment (PPE).
The thread, called Acero, works by combining stainless steel and Kevlar para-aramid fibres.
Guetermann said that the aramid fibres of the wrapping ensure a high breaking strength, low density and high chemical resistance against acids and alkalis; the stainless steel fibres of the core enable high cut-and high heat resistance. The thread can self-extinguish when a fire source is removed.
