China: 5G-optimised ‘smart’ textile and apparel network
Local media has reported that Chinese apparel manufacturer, Hongdou Group (better known as Hodo) and China Unicom, a Chinese state-owned telecommunications operator, have signed an agreement to jointly establish a 5G network - or cloud - specific to the nation’s textile and apparel industry.

Intended to be all-encompassing, the new network will, among other things, enable the creation of a smart garment factory, smart retail models and a “5G smart clothing alliance”.

Hodo has been “actively exploring intelligent solutions” for the apparel industry, at all levels, since the formation of its industrial internet arm in 2017.

China Unicom has a 5G licence and is dedicated to researching and realising “advanced technologies” such as 5G, as well as a “ubiquitous” internet of things.

Hodo’s vice president and chief engineer, Wang Xiaojun, commented that the intention behind the network is to build an “industry benchmark” and “achieve breakthroughs in personalised customisation, intelligent production, networked collaboration and digital transformation.”

The partnership was cemented in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, with high-ranking figures from both organisations in attendance, in addition to local municipal leaders.
