First Japanese company joins Fashion Pact

Sports brand ASICS has become the first Japanese company to join the Fashion Pact. It made the announcement in mid-December.

Thirty-two fashion and textile companies signed the Fashion Pact in August 2019 as a new commitment to protecting climate, biodiversity and the oceans of the world.

A year after its foundation, the group announced that its membership had nearly doubled to 60 organisations, representing around 200 brands. It said this equated to about one-third of the global fashion industry.

Sportswear brands involved already include Decathalon, Moncler, Puma, Nike and adidas.
ASICS said it had joined the group as part of its focus on climate change. It announced last year a commitment to set science-based emissions reduction targets in support of global efforts to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Currently, ASICS aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at business locations by 38% compared to its figures for 2015, and by 55% per product along the supply chain by 2030.
It is preparing to raise these targets in 2021.

It has made a commitment to source 100% sustainable cotton for its apparel and accessories by 2025.
