Banana fibre adds flavour to H&M footwear story
Retailer H&M has teamed up with UK-based shoe brand Good News for a trainer collection that uses recycled rubber from car tyres and old shoes, and uppers made of recycled cotton, Vegea and Bananatex.

Bananatex is a material based on the fibre from the banana plant family, produced in the Philippines and woven in Taiwan, overseen by Swiss company QWSTION. The fibre, which is extracted from the abaca trees, is turned into paper, and then into yarn and woven.

Vegea is a coated fabric, made partly from oils and natural fibres from the agroindustry.

H&M designer David Söderlund said Good News’ creativity and drive was inspiring. “The collection is a bright and colourful contrast to a grey and uncertain world. I love the colours and the innovative materials."

The Good News x H&M collection will be available online, and will also include children’s styles.

Nia Jones, co-founder of Good News, which was launched in London in 2016, said: “We all need to work alongside each other to help create a positive change. The world needs unity, rather than competing against each other.”
