Top brands donate deadstock to young designers

UK brands and retailers with excess stock and materials are pooling together to donate fabrics to fashion students, to reduce waste while helping the young designers.

Twenty-four brands have joined The British Fashion Council (BFC)’s Student Fabric Initiative so far, donating material to 33 colleges.

The scheme was piloted with Burberry earlier this year, which created a centralised logistics process for donations to act as a blueprint for other brands and colleges to work together.

Caroline Rush, chief executive of BFC, said: “One of the BFC‘s priorities is to encourage the industry to move towards a circular fashion economy while supporting excellence in fashion design. Being able to help students in need while managing to offset waste is an important example of the power of industry-wide collaboration.”

Brands taking part include Asics, Barbour, Paul Smith, River Island, Roksanda, Simone Rocha and Victoria Beckham.
