Owning tanneries helps Ecco ‘do the right thing’
Ecco, the Danish footwear company and tannery owner, has launched an updated version of its DriTan tanning process, which it introduced in 2018 to reduce water and energy, chemicals, wastewater and sludge.

DriTan 2.0 enables the company to reduce chemicals and solid waste further, while using less energy.

Vice-president of production Panos Mytaros said: “The advances we make in terms of improving the environmental performance of our procedures are only possible because we have a diverse team of experts who, each within their line of work, has a profound respect for and knowledge about leather.

“Leather is actually a prime example of upcycling and fits the principles of circular economy. We start with something that's a leftover material from the meat and dairy industry. And by the time we're done with it, we have this beautiful, durable, and premium material in our hands. It doesn't get any better than that.”

CEO Steen Borgholm added: "At ECCO, we have a unique opportunity to be frontrunners in our industry because we own and control the entire value chain. We don't have to convince anyone. We just do it, because we believe it is the right thing to do.”

DriTan 2.0 has already been implemented at Ecco’s tannery in Indonesia, and it is being introduced throughout the group.

Ecco’s products are sold in 89 countries and the family owned company employs 21,400 people.
