Partially bio-based polyamide yarn from Solvay

Advanced materials and performance chemicals group Solvay is launching a new polyamide 5.6 yarn called Bio Amni. As the name suggests, the yarn, which is being produced entirely at the group’s textile unit in Brazil, is partially bio-based. Solvay said it had been two years in development.

It told sportstextiles that the polyamide is 47% derived from sugar cane, an abundant renewable resource in Brazil. Its research and development team there has developed a technique of extracting the polyamide fibres by fermenting the sugars. The other 53% is from synthetic polyamide polymers.

Solvay has said that Bio Amni would take the overall share of more sustainable products to 30% of its global polyamide output. It hopes to reach 50% in the next three years.
