Fulgar keeps pace with recycled polyamide 6.6

Q-Cycle, a post-consumer recycled polyamide 6.6 yarn, is the result of a recent tie-up between German chemicals group BASF - specifically, its ChemCycling recycling initiative - and Italian fibre producer Fulgar, which will sell the product.

The latter party said that the new yarn offers buyers functional and aesthetic benefits (such as lightness, strength and resistance) equal to those of conventional polyamide, “but in a greener form”. It added that Q-Cycle has “excellent” moisture absorption properties and that fabrics made with the yarn demonstrate the “same” solidity levels as virgin polyamide when processed with conventional dyeing and production methods.

Q-Cycle can also be combined with other fibres, just like its conventional counterpart.

The “unique” ChemCycling project which helped facilitate this latest development is based on pyrolysis technology (a thermal decomposition process), which enables the reuse of end-of-life fossil raw materials in their initial component forms, Fulgar stated. This mitigates the use of non-renewables such as oil while maintaining the same qualities and properties as virgin resources.

The technology can be applied to all non-mechanically recyclable plastic waste.

Q-Cycle is Oeko-Tex Standard 100-compliant and is currently under evaluation for International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus, a social and environmental supply chain standard which, if obtained, will certify the mass balance accounting system used to verify the new yarn’s recycled content. Evaluation of its life-cycle assessment is also ongoing.
