Lightest Puma football shirt ever
Sports brand Puma chose Italy’s match against Spain in the semi-final of the UEFA Nations League tournament to unveil new technology called Ultraweave.
Italy lost the match 1-2, but Ultraweave allowed its players to compete wearing Puma’s lighest ever performance apparel.
The sports company said it had developed Ultraweave following years of testing by athletes. Each jersey has a chassis weight of 72 grammes, thanks to its construction, which uses a lightweight woven fabric featuring a four-way engineered mechanical stretch.
This fabric also features a two-dimensional ripstop structure that gives durability while enhancing player movement, Puma said. Further weight reduction is achieved through a specially crafted pattern that reduces the conventional design to just two main panels (rather than four or eight), reducing the number of seams and stitches in the jersey.
Creative director for team sports at Puma, Stefano Favaro, said: “Our athletes wanted something lighter and faster to help them achieve the marginal gains needed at the highest level. This resulted in four years of testing and development to achieve the lightest football jersey we have ever made.”
