FibreTrace to enable Beninese cotton traceability
Singapore-headquartered FibreTrace, a textiles traceability technology provider, has been engaged by pan-African industrial park developer Arise Integrated Industrial Platforms (Arise IIP) to support a new spinner-to-garment cotton traceability pilot programme in Benin.

The technology will be put in place at Arise IIP’s new Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone (GDIZ) facility, a vertically integrated spinning, fabric and garment producing mill complex in Abomey-Calavi which is expected to be fully operational by autumn 2022.

This traceability-enabled site will be the first of its kind in Benin, the two businesses said. Garments made there will be able to be traced, verified and audited from boutiques back to the spinning mill floor.

Founder and chief executive of Arise IIP, Gagan Gupta, commented that his company eventually aims to harness FibreTrace technology across all its industrial parks (it currently also operates in Togo and Gabon) to “lead the way towards the sustainable transformation of local resources”. His end goal, Mr Gupta said, is to make every stage of production transparent “for the benefit of local farmers and the end consumer”.

Chief executive at FibreTrace, Shannon Mercer, himself described the partnership as the first step in making African-grown cotton “more visible”.

Mr Mercer added: “We look forward to the day that the primary impact data from African farmers is combined with traceability to showcase Africa’s contribution towards a better future for the textile industry.”

Benin is reportedly expected to have capacity to process 98,000 tonnes of lint cotton per annum by the close of 2023.
