Origin and Mitsui aim to ‘industrialise’ carbon negative materials

Origin Materials, a US-based maker of “carbon negative” materials, has signed a strategic partnership with Japanese conglomerate Mitsui & Co to “industrialise advanced carbon negative materials”.

Origin Materials’ technology platform turns wood residue into materials that reduce the need for fossil resources. The process converts C-6 cellulose into building-block chemicals in one step. The process sequesters carbon, so the company describes it as “restorative”.

The partnership aims to rapidly develop new sustainable carbon-negative products for the textiles industry, as well as automotive, chemicals, electronics, packaging and construction.

As part of the partnership, Mitsui signed a multi-year capacity reservation agreement to purchase sustainable carbon-negative materials from Origin Materials.

Rich Riley, Co-CEO of Origin Materials, said: “We are pleased to partner with Mitsui, a global leader in multiple business areas, including chemicals, textiles, and many others. We are strategically aligned and share a common vision for the role that sustainable, cost-competitive, carbon-negative materials can play in creating value worldwide.”
