Origin Materials earns US bio-based certification

Celulose material specialist Origin Materials has earned the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Biobased Product label.

Origin Materials’ technology platform turns wood residue into materials that reduce the need for fossil resources.

The process converts C-6 cellulose into building-block chemicals in one step. The process sequesters carbon, so the company describes it as “restorative”.

Rich Riley, co-CEO of Origin Materials, said: "Earning the USDA Certified Biobased Product label is a significant step in our mission to transition the world to sustainable, carbon-negative materials.

“With this third-party certification, Origin becomes a preferred supplier of biobased materials to the United States government. And we further strengthen our leadership position in renewable, carbon-negative materials that reduce the need for fossil resources.”

Insulation maker PrimaLoft is teaming up with Origin Materials to develop “carbon-negative, insulating, high-performance fibres”.
