Polimoda launches master in textiles programme
International trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort, who has been speaking out for a radical transformation of the fashion industry for years, is teaming up with Florence-based fashion school Polimoda to create a master’s programme in textiles, to launch this autumn.

In support of a sustainable future for fashion, Ms Edelkoort believes it is necessary to go back to the basics and train future fashion professionals to make better use of the industry’s resources, its raw materials, fibres and fabrics. This requires an understanding of their intrinsic properties and aesthetics.

The two-year programme, whose official name is Masters in Textiles, from Farm to Fabric to Fashion, will actually start at the farm. Students will learn about the growing of crops, from linen and cotton to hemp and ramie, and the grooming of animals. They will also acquire fibre knowledge, learn to design yarns and dyeing techniques. They will then move on to make fabrics, create new weaves and patterns, as well as practice knitting, crochet, lace and embroidery. The second year of the programme remains focused on fabrics, including exploration into hybrid techniques combining craftsmanship and technology as well as embroidery, patchwork and beading. Classes on anthropology and archaeology will cover the social and historical role of textiles.

“Not long ago, the fashion industry did things differently,” said Ms Edelkoort at the press conference launch. “Fabric came first, it defined the use and message of an item of clothing.” She mentioned Burberry, Missoni and Marimekko as examples of brands built on a specific type of fabric, checks, scrambled knits and flat flower prints, respectively. “These companies are still strong today,” she pointed out.

The two-year programme will be launched in the autumn of 2022.
